6 Facts About Contact Lenses

six facts about contact lenses

Contact lenses are great alternatives to prescription glasses. Not only are they aesthetically pleasing, but they’re also convenient and hassle-free. Like most glasses, contact lenses can be for aesthetic purposes or prescribed by an ophthalmologist. You can buy contacts at any circle lens store within your area.

But did you know these facts about contact lenses?

6 Facts About Contact Lenses

  1. Leonardo da Vinci invented the first contact lens in 1508.
However, wearing a water-filled glass hemisphere over the eye was impractical. Rene Descartes, a French philosopher, elaborated on the concept in 1636, proposing a glass tube to be worn directly on the cornea. However, this “contact lens” was never produced because it prevented the eye from blinking. It took until 1888 for Adolf Fick, a German ophthalmologist, to create the first fitted contact lens (made of blown glass).

  2. The earliest contact lenses were made of glass.
You read that right! The first contact lenses were made of glass! Can you imagine putting a glass shard in your eye? Neither can we! Contacts were blown out of glass in the late 1800s. These lenses were applied to damaged areas of the eye using animal jelly. However, not everyone could wear contacts back then. Only people with severely damaged eyes could wear these glass lenses.

  3. Daily contacts are better for your eyes
Using your lenses once and then discarding them is far safer than wearing the same lenses for two weeks or a month at a time. No matter the type of contacts you use –korean contact lenses, toric circle lenses or prescription contact lenses, it’ll be safe to use different ones daily. You reduce the possibility of introducing bacteria into your eyes and other problems. Dailies are only more expensive if your contacts are properly cleaned.

  4. A Mostly Female Consumer base.
Two-thirds of contact lens wearers are female, and the average age of wearers worldwide is 31.

  5. Most contact wearers don’t follow instructions.
According to the US National Library of Medicine, approximately 40%-90% of all contact lens wearers need to follow the proper instructions given by their optometrist.

  6. There’s a smaller percentage of diseases through contact lenses.
Contact lenses are so safe that only one in every 500 people develops a severe eye infection!
